![]() ![]() Bonzo is a fine drummer but is one of many fine drummers of the era including Mitch Mitchell, Ian Paice, Michael Shrieve, Simon Kirke, Aynsly Dunbar and Carmine Appice (who claims he gave Bonham his style). To start with, bearing in mind I have played drums for almost thirty of my almost forty years, I don't think the rhythm section are as devastatingly good as is commonly believed. Here's the deal, and I know it's an unpopular way of seeing things because everyone to whom I have expressed this view castigates me for it (I might be the ultimate hipster if I knew what one was), Led Zeppelin is cheesy and average. I really don't think it's going too far to say that the entire global direction of "hard rock" was forever influenced by Led Zeppelin. ![]() In the early to mid 70's LZ was more popular than the Beatles, and unlike the Rolling Stones and the Who, LZ actually formed the basis for a whole genre of "heavy metal" (hah!). They easily could've capitalized on StH and Whole Lotta Love, etc.Īnother point often made by an old friend of mine who had a full ride music scholarship to Oberlin is that from a purely musical standpoint Page, Bonham, Plant and Jones represented a level of cohesive talent that was very hard to duplicate. Quick, off the top of your head, what is the most requested rock single on FM radio of the past several decades? And, yet, Stairway to Heaven wasn't even initially released as a single. LZ IV wasn't even titled, even though it came to be known as Runes. They built their brand by shunning branding. LZ was adamant that their albums were whole listening experiences, not just pop singles to make it onto the charts for a week or six. ![]() Zep's also one of the few bands who doesn't think that the whole purpose of their music is to sell out to commercials and sell Cadillac's. I also think that by not releasing singles they encouraged listening to the whole album. Wait, what?!? Their music was used in a Cadillac commercial! Well I don't know what happened there, but as a whole there music hasn't been used in commercials. I don't hear anyone crying about CCR ripping off ol' bluesman (I don't follow CCR that much so maybe they do)! That was originally a Leadbelly song and it probably goes further back than Leadbelly. But other artists have done the same thing. I can also see though how you might feel that Zep ripped off some old blues artists and simply sang their songs like they created them. I think that every Zep album has a distinct sound. I used to fall asleep telling myself that someday I was going to play the solo to Since I've Been Loving You just like Jimmy Page. Why is this? Led Zeppelin was one of my favorite bands growing up. I see JackIsidore thinks that Led Zeppelin is overrated. ![]()
